8. Know Your Audience
As a business owner, it's important that you understand the needs, wants, and interests of your customers. Supply and demand is the driving force behind every market. You can't fill the demand if you don't know what it is.
Take time to get to know your customers. What are they interested in? What do they like? What don't they like? If your customer is another business, what industry do they operate in? What are the company's goals?
This all important information! Especially in business to business sales. What ever your service is, that's not what you are actually selling. You are selling the end result. For instance, here at iShell Website Designs, we don't sell website design... we sell business solutions. We sell increased traffic. We sell increased brand visibility. We sell other businesses the opportunity to grow and scale their company.

If you run an eCommerce store, you don't sell your products. You sell the feeling that your customers get when they own one of your products!
I could sit here all day and talk to you about the fact that I know how to develop mobile responsive websites and that I'm skilled in PHP, JAVA, CSS, and HTML coding. But if I did that I wouldn't be marketing to my target audience. I would be marketing to other web development companies. Essentially, I would be creating a resume to get a job.
My point is, it's important to study and understand your target audience. This is one the most important things that you can do to ensure the success of your business.
9. Get Personal With Your Customers
But not too personal. Your customers need to be able to trust you. If you haven't built up trust in your brand yet, then the only way to establish trust is to let them get to know you. Don't be afraid to show your true self, to a certain degree, when talking with them.
Ask them questions. Joke with them a little bit. Just make sure to keep it professional. The more that they get know you, the more likely they are to buy what you're selling.
10. Be Persistent, But Patient
Remember, Rome wasn't built in a day. Building your company is going to take time and persistence. Keep this in mind when you get frustrated and want to give up. It's important to take time for yourself, as well.
I struggle with this myself, sometimes. When you are passionate about something it can be difficult to tear yourself away, but it's important to break away for a bit so you CAN be persistent. I know that doesn't sound right, but you're not going to do yourself any good by burning yourself out. That can lead to frustration... and that's never good.
Building a business takes more than just selling products or services. It takes energy, a positive attitude, a willingness to face rejection and failure, and it takes persistence and patience. Ultimately, it takes a strong person that is prepared.
Understanding your customers and your market are two of the most important aspects of growing your business. So, take as much time as you can to study both and gather as much information as you can.
These are some of the principles that I have learned along my journey into the business world. I hope that by sharing them I have helped and inspired others to pursue their goals and dreams.
