10 Principles For Building a Successful Business

Most people, at some point, have had the idea to start their own business. Whether it be in the service industry, selling products, or running your own store; creating a business can be an exciting adventure! The thought of being your own boss, making your own hours, and being in control of your financial freedom can be very liberating. Some people take the leap and jump into their own business, while more often than not, many people don't. In my opinion, most don't because of fear, a lack of self-confidence, and because they just don't know where to begin.

I remember when I decided to start my own website development company, I was in the same boat. I knew that I had the skills to design and develop websites, but I didn't have the confidence in myself when it came to trying to sell my services. I was also terrified of failure. So many people give up before they even try, so they don't have to deal with feeling like they failed. Lastly, I had no idea where to begin!

There is so much more to starting your own business than just having the skills or knowledge about your industry. It's not just about the effort you put in, either. In this article, I will discuss some of the habits, traits, and qualities that a business owner needs in order to be successful. I will also share with you some tips to help you get your business up and running. So, let's get started.

1. Form Good Habits

How do businesses have habits, you ask? Simple. The heart of every business is the person that built it. People have habits and our habits effect every thing that we touch.

Habits form routines. Routines become standards. Standards become the philosophy, by which you run your business. By forming good habits, you are laying a solid foundation to build your business upon.

Once I learned how my habits effected my life and began to change them, my entire life started to change. Here are a few habits that I formed that have really had a positive effect on my business.

  • Wake up early every day (I get up at 4am every day)
  • Exercise every morning (at least 30 minutes)
  • Meditate every day
  • Read books
  • Avoid negativity
  • Be decisive and take action
  • Avoid wasting time

2. Develop a Positive Mental Attitude

You can't be successful without a positive attitude. It just doesn't work. If you are anything like me, this will take some work. It starts with your self-esteem. I think it is human nature to be negative about ourselves and our circumstances.

Understand that circumstances don't just change. In order to change things, YOU have to change. One way that I found to improve my confidence and self-esteem was to set minor, short-term goals for myself. Whether it was losing weight, getting in shape, or landing a new client, every time I achieved a small goal it was a great confidence booster.

Meditation has helped me immensely! I was able to evaluate the thoughts I was having about myself, my situation, and my goals. Once I understood the thoughts I was having, I was able to change them so they had a more positive effect.

3. Take Care of Your Health

I will be the first to admit that, until recently, I was not the most active person! Now, I exercise for at least a half-hour every day. Although, it's usually more. Everyone knows that exercise will help you lose weight and get in better shape. But let me tell you, the boost in your energy is a huge benefit when focusing on growing your business!

More energy means more time spent working on your company. You may also find that exercise will help you to direct your focus a little more and avoid distractions.

4. Become a Student

I don't necessarily mean this in the literal sense. Although, going back to school to learn more about your industry isn't a bad idea. What I mean is study. Study yourself. Study personal growth. Study your industry. Study your customers/clients. STUDY EVERYTHING!

Life is about growth. The only way to grow is to continue to learn. If you will dedicate your time to learning about your industry, your market, and your craft, in a short time you will be an expert!

As a part of my own self-improvement, I started reading. I read as much as I possibly can and now I'm up to about 2 books a month. I usual try to alternate the topics I'm reading up on. I do alot of reading on personal growth and, of course, web design and development. Here are a few of the personal development books that have really helped me to become more successful.

  • Think and Grow Rich
  • The Secret
  • As a Man Thinketh
  • How to Win Friends and Influence People
  • The Richest Man in Babylon

5. Build Your Online Presence

Every business that is serious about being successful needs an online presence of some sort. Most companies, at the very least, need a website, so that when potential customers are looking for your product or service they find you and not one of your competitors.

Some people may say that a website is not necessary and that may be true for someone that just wants to run a little side business. But for someone that is trying to build a serious business and become financially independent, a website is essential in adding credibility to your company.

7. Focus Your Online Marketing in the Right Places

Ok, so now you have a website. So, now what?

Well, now you have to get customers to visit your website. There are many ways to accomplish this, but be prepared, it takes time to build organic traffic to your website.

The most productive thing you can do at this point is start marketing your businesses website on social media. Websites like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Pinterest give you the ability to reach thousands of people across the world. But that doesn't necessarily mean all of these platforms will be worth your time.

For example, I have found that I'm better off focusing my marketing efforts for iShell Website Designs on LinkedIn. When I first began marketing my business I made the mistake of concentrating on Facebook.

Is Facebook a powerful marketing platform? Yes, of course!

However, I found that when offering business to business services, it's not quite as useful. The reason is that people that use Facebook are using it to socialize, for the most part.

They aren't interested in being spammed about services related to their work. Not only that, but the people that are on there in a business capacity are usually doing the same thing that you are trying to do. Market their business and gain leads. So, they have no interest in what you are offering.

Don't get me wrong, Facebook is very useful to businesses that are offering products or services to the general public. For instance, if you own an online store that sells mens clothes, Facebook is the perfect place to promote your products. However, if you run an advertisement agency that helps other businesses market their brand, you may have a harder time generating leads. That's not to say it won't work, but in that case there are better ways to grow your business.

8. Know Your Audience

As a business owner, it's important that you understand the needs, wants, and interests of your customers. Supply and demand is the driving force behind every market. You can't fill the demand if you don't know what it is.

Take time to get to know your customers. What are they interested in? What do they like? What don't they like? If your customer is another business, what industry do they operate in? What are the company's goals?

This all important information! Especially in business to business sales. What ever your service is, that's not what you are actually selling. You are selling the end result. For instance, here at iShell Website Designs, we don't sell website design... we sell business solutions. We sell increased traffic. We sell increased brand visibility. We sell other businesses the opportunity to grow and scale their company.

If you run an eCommerce store, you don't sell your products. You sell the feeling that your customers get when they own one of your products!

I could sit here all day and talk to you about the fact that I know how to develop mobile responsive websites and that I'm skilled in PHP, JAVA, CSS, and HTML coding. But if I did that I wouldn't be marketing to my target audience. I would be marketing to other web development companies. Essentially, I would be creating a resume to get a job.

My point is, it's important to study and understand your target audience. This is one the most important things that you can do to ensure the success of your business.

9. Get Personal With Your Customers

But not too personal. Your customers need to be able to trust you. If you haven't built up trust in your brand yet, then the only way to establish trust is to let them get to know you. Don't be afraid to show your true self, to a certain degree, when talking with them.

Ask them questions. Joke with them a little bit. Just make sure to keep it professional.  The more that they get know you, the more likely they are to buy what you're selling.

10. Be Persistent, But Patient

Remember, Rome wasn't built in a day. Building your company is going to take time and persistence. Keep this in mind when you get frustrated and want to give up. It's important to take time for yourself, as well.

I struggle with this myself, sometimes. When you are passionate about something it can be difficult to tear yourself away, but it's important to break away for a bit so you CAN be persistent. I know that doesn't sound right, but you're not going to do yourself any good by burning yourself out. That can lead to frustration... and that's never good.

Building a business takes more than just selling products or services. It takes energy, a positive attitude, a willingness to face rejection and failure, and it takes persistence and patience. Ultimately, it takes a strong person that is prepared.

Understanding your customers and your market are two of the most important aspects of growing your business. So, take as much time as you can to study both and gather as much information as you can.

These are some of the principles that I have learned along my journey into the business world. I hope that by sharing them I have helped and inspired others to pursue their goals and dreams.
